September arrives and the summer months ebb away, and the nights grow longer and the earth begins to cool down. In days gone by, the Minster used to be quiet during August, but latterly, we’ve been quite busy: increased visitors, the Education Department Family Fun Days, and much preparation for the autumn term and even, dare I say for next year.
Choir term begins on Sunday 6th September, following their visit to Brecon Cathedral over the August bank holiday weekend. Our liturgy will once again be enriched by their presence and Children’s Church will run concurrently, providing stimulation and fun for our children and young people.
This month sees the Halifax Heritage Weekend, which involves much activity across the town and particularly here in the Minster. This year will see our Treasury on display, a concert given by Versatile Brass & Halifax Young Singers, and a presentation to the Bishop of Leeds of the Recording of the Minster by the National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts Society. The weekend finishes with Evensong at All Souls at 4.00pm on the Sunday.
The new Vision Groups begin in earnest this term following their launch in July. There remains real encouragement for people to volunteer and get involved. Do contact the co-ordinators if you’d like to join a group: John Hardy for Finance; Jonathan Bish for Worship; Jenette Lee for Social Justice; Matthew Hunter for Education and Growth. All information can be found on the Minster website, or ask one of the staff for information.
The Initiation Service will be on All Saints Sunday – 1st November with the Bishop of Huddersfield. Preparation begins in September for all seeking baptism, admission to communion, confirmation, and re-affirmation of faith. If you are not signed up and would like to be, please contact any of the Clergy for more information.
At its July meeting, the Church Council approved the budget for 2016. As a result of this, a major review of the staffing structure has taken place, and as a result, Gillian Farr, our Administrator, will be leaving her post mid-September. We thank Gill for everything she brought to that role over a number of years and wish her every blessing for the future. A new post will be advertised to support the Office – 20 hours a week, 10.00am – 2.00pm Monday – Friday. If you are interested, please speak with any of the Clergy or Church Wardens. Interviews will be on 25th September.
The month concludes with Michaelmas and Music Sunday when we shall be joined by the Music Department of Rishworth School. The President and Preacher will be the Bishop of Bolton.
Have a great month!
All best wishes,
