Nave Floor Project
The Friends Project for 2016 has been to make a major financial contribution towards the repair to the Nave floor and the re-modelling for wider participation of the Minster by the Town and Borough. This will improve the space for worship as well as culture, education and civic engagement.
The Friends annual lecture for 2016 will be on Sunday 15th May at 2.30pm. Professor David Baker will demonstrate both organs in the Minster in this 650th anniversary year of the original Snetzler Organ arriving in the Minster in 1766, now re-built by Harrison and Harrison of Durham. In the last few years we have hosted an Annual Lecture and also a coach trip to visit other Minsters in the North of England, and of course had our annual AGM.
In May 2014 we held the Annual Lecture. This was given by Angela Clare who is Project Officer at Bankfield Museum. Her talk was entitled “For King and Country: experiences from the region during the First World War”. It was a fascinating talk with many pictures and quite a large appreciative audience. look out for the next Lecture due to run in Spring 2015.
In June 2014 our annual visit was to Selby Abbey and then on to Holy Trinity Church, Hull.
Holy Trinity is the largest parish church in England. It is easy to find as it is about 5 minutes from the Marina and Prince’s Quay
It has some beautiful windows, an octagonal font and fixed pews with some very amusing carvings on them. On our visit we saw “Follow the Herring”, an exhibition about the Herring Girls who travelled the east coast following the fishing boats in order to process their catch es.
On Sunday 5th October 2014 at 10.30am, all Friends are invited to attend the morning Eucharist. The preacher will be Canon Simon Cowling, Vicar of Bolton Abbey. This service will be followed by the Annual General Meeting and Faith Lunch. Please bring along some food to share if you are attending the AGM.
