Director of Music
Ian received his early musical education at Bradford Cathedral where he became Head Chorister and later Organ Scholar. Following a period as Associate Director and later Director of The Bradford Choristers he returned to the cathedral as Assistant Organist. He graduated with BA Hons from Huddersfield University and gained his PGCE from Lancaster University whilst Organ Scholar of St Martin’s College.
His career has been largely in education. Following positions in Wakefield, he became Director of Music at Barnard Castle School, County Durham, St Edmund’s School, Canterbury and Marlborough College. Ian has given many solo recitals, conducted in most UK cathedrals, directed a number of youth choirs and choral societies, toured extensively overseas, appeared on the BBC, ITV and Canadian TV, made numerous recordings and worked with artist’s as diverse as Harry Secombe and Chris de Burgh.
He has been involved in work with The Royal School of Church Music, been President of the Music Masters’ Association and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts for his work in education. Following a period of three years as Director of Music at The King’s School Ely, he enjoyed a freelance career as a conductor, organist, adjudicator, advisor and restauranteur. He is delighted to have been asked to become Director of Music at the Minster from Easter Day, 2020.
